Sustainable development: floods, SUDS and rainwater harvesting

Institute: Earth and Environmental services [SEES], University of Portsmouth

Duration: 3 hours

Cost: Fee £85.

Course code: 996

Description: We have a legacy of building on flood plains and by the sea and that has placed more than two million homes at current risk of flooding. That is exacerbated by development which has created major problems in dealing with foul water and with run-off from developed sites, not to mention the possible effects of climate change. This course looks at the risks and at what can be done in new developments to mitigate them and to build in resilience. Case studies of recent schemes are used to illustrate the principles.
