Institute: Earth and Environmental services [SEES], University of Portsmouth

Duration: 4 hours

Cost: Fee £85.

Course code: 1005

Description: Trees in the built environment are an enormous asset but also the cause of many problems. This course looks at the conditions that give rise to tree related problems, examines the damage they cause, considers the torts of nuisance and negligence and relevant case law, considers the extent to which insurance can provide protection and reviews current provisions for Tree Preservation Orders. It is set in the RHS Gardens Wisley where there are specimens which allow discussion of both identification and the management of risk during a tour of the gardens.
